The research investigates fingerprint recognition as one of the most reliable biometrics identification methods. An automatic identification process of humans-based on fingerprints requires the input fingerprint to be matched with a large number of fingerprints in a database. To reduce the search time and computational complexity, it is desirable to classify the database of fingerprints into an accurate and consistent manner so that the input fingerprint is matched only with a subset of the fingerprints in the database. In this regard, the research addressed fingerprint classification. The goal is to improve the accuracy and speed up of existing automatic fingerprint identification algorithms. The investigation is based on analysis of fingerprint characteristics and feature classification using neural network and fuzzy-neural classifiers. The methodology developed, is comprised of image processing, computation of a directional field image, singular-point detection, and feature vector encoding. The statistical distribution of feature vectors was analysed using SPSS. Three types of classifiers, namely, multi-layered perceptrons, radial basis function and fuzzy-neural methods were implemented. The developed classification systems were tested and evaluated on 4,000 fingerprint images on the NIST-4 database. For the five-class problem, classification accuracy of 96.2% for FNN, 96.07% for MLP and 84.54% for RBF was achieved, without any rejection. FNN and MLP classification results are significant in comparison with existing studies, which have been reviewed

Grapefruit (Citrus Paradisi Macf.) is one of the most important citrus fruits in the Sudan. It can be successfully grown throughout the country where there are suitable soils and sufficient water to sustain tree growth. The objectives of this study were to find out the effects of different nitrogen sources, effective microorganisms (EM) and their combinations on the vegetative growth of shrubs of selected grapefruit cultivars. A field experiment was carried out at Umbarona, Wad Medani, Gezira State, Sudan, latitude 14.38 N, longitude 33.48 E and altitude 409 masl, in June 2012. Treatments consisted of three grapefruit cultivars: Marsh Seedless, Red Blush and Shamber. Fertilizer treatments were urea (100%), chicken manure (100%), urea with chicken manure (50% each), urea with EM, chicken manure with EM, urea (50%)+ chicken manure (50%)+ EM and unfertilized control. All fertilizer treatments were applied at the rate of 43 kg N/ha. Treatments were arranged in a split- plot design with two replicates. Grapefruit cultivars were allotted to the main plots and fertilizer treatments to the sub-plots. Data were collected on plant height (cm), stem diameter (cm), number of new branches, length of new branches (cm) and diameter of new branches (cm). Results showed that Marsh Seedless cultivar had the most vigorous vegetative growth compared to the other two cultivars. The results showed that the combination of urea, chicken manure and EM significantly gave the highest vegetative growth values, followed by chicken manure with EM, urea with chicken manure, urea with EM, urea alone, chicken manure alone and the least values of growth parameters were recorded for the unfertilized control. It is recommended to grow Marsh Seedless grapefruit cultivar and fertilize it with a combination of urea, chicken manure and EM.

INTRODUCTION : Lateral cephalometry is important in the orthodontic diagnosis of jaw relationships, in treatment planning, and prediction of growth but also in the evaluation of different facial forms. Little research has evaluated the orthopantomograph for these purposes. AIM : To compare the data taken from orthopantomographs and lateral cephalograms in the investigation of vertical jaw relationships and to assess correlation between measurements. MATERIALS AND METHODS : The gonial angle, ramus height and condyle angle were measured for each patient on the two radiographs and these data compared for the three different facial growth types, dolichofacial, mesofacial and brachyfacial. RESULTS : In subjects with normal (meso-) or horizontal (brachy-) growth patterns, there were no significant differences between the mean and median values for the gonial and condyle angles, but the ramus heights showed significant differences. The data of the vertical (dolicho-) growth pattern patients recorded significant differences only between the data for the gonial angles and the ramus heights. Significant correlations were found between the gonial angles and the condyle angles for all three growth patterns, but not for ramus heights. CONCLUSION : in comparing the data from the two radiographs, the angular measurements showed high correlation and predictability whilst linear measurements showed inconsistency.https://www.sada.co.za/the-sadjam2019Orthodontic

    Get PDF
In this work the numerical simulation of aerodynamic performance of low aspect ratio wings at low Reynolds numbers applicable to micro aerial vehicle is carried out. Commercial software STAR-CCM+ was used to simulate the flow and predict the aerodynamics performances of the low aspect ratio wing. Results were presented in terms of pressure coefficient distribution, flow visualization, lift and drag coefficients for angle of attacks ranging from 0˚ to 18˚ and Reynolds numbers ranging from 104 to 105 Keywords: Rectangular planform wing; Tip vortices; Flow separation . The results showed that, for rectangular planform wing, the distribution of the pressure is dominated by vortices. The results also showed the formation of tip vortices at lower Reynolds number for rectangular wing configuration. It is evident from the results that the type of wing configurations plays a very important role in delaying or preventing the flow separation

Many microorganisms and plants were found produce polysaccharides which are widely varying in their composition and structure. The extracellular polysaccharide produced by   Xanthomonas campestris pv. campestris, is chemically analyzed and used industrially. However, only the xanthan gum which was ranking as the best among the ten polysaccharides was used commercially in large amounts. The xanthan gum has numerous applications in food and other industries. The present study was aiming to investigate the capacity of X; campestris pv. sesami for the production of xanthan gum, using culture media containing different carbon sources. The properties of the produced material were investigated (pH, viscosity, and chromatographic analysis using thin layer chromatography).  The results showed that the weight of the product was increasing with time reaching about 9.8g at the tenth day compared to only 2.1g on the second day. The results of the effect of different carbon sources indicated that sucrose was the best giving 9.0 g in the 7th day compared to only 1.5g by raffinose. The pH was changing from 6.7 at the beginning of the experiment to 4.2 in the tenth day. However, the viscosity of the inoculated sucrose medium was found to increase from 2.4 unit at the second day to 9.7 units after ten days. Analysis on paper chromatography showed that the produced polysaccharide contains mannose, glucuronic acid, glucose, rhamnose but no ribose nor trehalose or fructose were detected. The results indicated that the investigated bacterium was producing large amounts of xanthan gum. Although, Xanthan gum was discovered in 1950s its substantial commercial production began in 1964 and in 1969, the USA, Food and Drug Administration authorized its use in food. Xanthan gum, now has numerous uses in food and other industries. Further studies should be carried on other isolates  of the bacterium   X. campestris pv. sesami and more chemical analysis are needed

Preliminary experiments were conducted at Northern area, Gedarif State during seasons of 2002-03, 2006-07.Where as advanced trials during 2008/2009 to 2012/2013 at northern and Southern areas. The objective was to evaluate selected sorghum genotypes for sorghum midge resistance. A total of 3000 accessions were obtained from Gene Bank Resources. Resistant genotype, DJ 6514 (Resistant Check already released in 2007) was obtained from International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT). Result showed that the midge damage rating was significantly different among genotypes. The midge damage rating scores ranged between, 1.3- 8.6; 1.1- 9.2; 1.4- 9.0; 1.1 – 9.4; and 1.2- 9.2 for all seasons (2008/09; 2009/10; 2010/11; 2011/12 and 2012/13). However, the lowest midge damage rating was recorded by DJ 6514 (Resistant check), followed by P₁ 570162 (Hag Abbakar); GBM 30 (Early Feterita); Wad Baco; and Safra (1.4; 1.5; 1.5, 1.6 and 1.7), respectively. Genotypes, P₁ 570162 (Hag Abbakar); GBM 30 (Early Feterita); Wad Baco; Safra and Harerai showed lowest % yield loss and performed similar to the resistant check (14.2; 14.5; 14.5; 17.0 and 17.3%), respectively. The combined analysis showed that a significant difference was observed between genotypes. The genotypes were significantly different in panicle types, compact and semi-compact headed genotypes showed lower % glumes coverage (1.3- 4.5%), while semi-compact headed genotypes ranged between 5.5 – 7.8%. Genotypes, Wad Baco; P₁ 570162 (Hag Abbakar); GBM 30 (Early Feterita); Safra; Wad Ahmed; Harerai and Wad Akar showed the shortest glumes coverage (1.3; 1.3; 1.5; 1.5; 1.6; 1.7 and 1.8 %). Compact headed genotypes recorded lowest midge density (6.5 adults/ 5 heads), while the semi-compact headed genotypes were recorded 15.7 adults/ 5 heads compared with others types of heads

A functional variant of the myeloperoxidase gene is associated with cardiovascular disease in end-stage renal disease patients

A functional variant of the myeloperoxidase gene is associated with cardiovascular disease in end-stage renal disease patients. Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of mortality in end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients and there is emerging evidence that genetic factors may contribute to the development of atherosclerosis. Myeloperoxidase (MPO) is an abundant enzyme involved in the production of free radicals. A functional G→A single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) has been identified at position -463, where the A allele is associated with lower MPO expression. To analyze the association between this SNP and inflammation, oxidative stress, and CVD, we studied a cohort of 155 ESRD patients (52 ± 1 years, 62% males, 22% diabetics) shortly before the initiation of dialysis treatment. CVD was defined by medical history criteria; plasma interleukin-6 (IL-6) was used as a marker of inflammation, and plasma pentosidine as an estimation of oxidative protein damage. DNA from leukocytes was used for genotyping, performed by the pyrosequencing reaction. Only five patients (3%) had the genotype AA at the -463 position, whereas 38 (25%) had the GA and 112 (72%) had the GG genotype. No differences were noted in plasma IL-6 levels between the genotype groups, whereas the pentosidine levels were higher in the GG group (28.4 pmol/mg albumin [range, 8.5 to 123 pmol/mg albumin]) compared to the other two groups (21.4 pmol/mg albumin [range, 7.6 to 384 pmol/mg albumin; P < 0.05]). Patients with the GG genotype had a higher prevalence of positive serology for Chlamydia pneumoniae (51%) when compared to the carriers of the A allele (24%) (P < 0.05). The prevalence of CVD was lower in the AA (0%) and GA genotypes (18%), compared to the GG genotype (35%). The GG genotype was still associated with CVD after correction for age, diabetes, smoking, malnutrition, and inflammation. Our findings suggest that the -463 G→A SNP, which supposedly results in lower MPO activity, is associated with a lower prevalence of CVD in ESRD patients. It could be speculated that this effect is mediated by a decreased oxidative stress due to lower production of free radicals
